Online retail giant, Amazon, is reportedly further expanding its logistics operations with the launch of a new delivery service for businesses that would put it in direct competition with shipping companies such as Fedex and UPS.
The Wall Street Journal cited “anonymous sources” as saying that the ‘Shipping with Amazon’ (SWA) service was expected to roll out in the United States soon, in collaboration with third-party sellers that sell goods via its website. There is no news yet on whether this service would be extended beyond the US.
Amazon is expected to send SWA drivers directly to retailers and warehouses to pick up parcels, cutting out other delivery services from the process, and taking the packages directly to consumers.
While the company didn’t deny the report, a spokesperson for Amazon, Kristen Kish, also didn’t directly confirm it, telling US media: “We’re always innovating and experimenting on behalf of customers and the businesses that sell and grow on Amazon to create faster lower-cost delivery choices.”
