First airline to offer a scheduled
service on the route

Leonard Neill
PRIVATELY OWNED Algerian airline Khalifa Airways has launched a weekly direct Johannesburg-Algiers service offering cargo space on its A340/300 aircraft with up to 18 tons capacity available. It is the first airline to offer a scheduled service on the route.
Khalifa flies into Johannesburg on Tuesday morning and returns at 22:00 the same day. For transhipment cargo, it offers a wide network of onward connections to both European and West African destinations. In addition it operates a dedicated A300/B4 freighter three times a week from Algiers to Amsterdam.
Swissport Cargo Sales has been appointed general sales agent at Johannesburg International Airport. Marketing manager Blake Sclanders says all cargo should be delivered to the Swissport warehouse at the airport six hours prior to departure.
Menouar Lafri has relocated from the airline's head office as South African manager for the group, which, apart from its airline interests, is involved in banking, pharmaceutical production, construction and has its own rent-a-car operation in Algeria.
"We have 35 aircraft all told apart from the president's own private jet," says Lafri. Khalifa will open an office on the third floor of Sandton City Office Towers on February 15.
