AIRFREIGHT CAPACITY into Africa is on the up thanks to Airlink’s expanding schedule. “We’ve increased our frequency to Madagascar and will eventually fly daily,” says Airlink Cargo managing director Alwyn Rautenbach. “It’s a huge opportunity for express and general cargo on the route. Although there’s not much coming out of the country, there’s a lot of export cargo supplying the tourism and manufacturing industries.” Zimbabwe is also a region of significant focus, particularly in light of the withdrawal of several international airlines. Airlink will shortly resume daily Harare flights, says Rautenbach. “With the likes of British Airways pulling out of Harare, the route is now served via South Africa which has created opportunities for carriers who operate between Harare and South Africa,” he said. Zambia’s thriving mining industry keeps Lusaka volumes buoyant, while the Pemba flights are well supported by supplies for the hotel industry. “Africa is a constantly growing market for us and the year ahead could see additional frequencies and routes based on market demand,” said Rautenbach. Airlink’s current regional route network includes Antananarivo, Beira, Bulawayo, Lusaka, Maseru, Manzini, Ndola and Pemba.
