Fuel surcharges up again
ALAN PEAT
AS A good barometer of fuel price effects on the airline cargo industry, Lufthansa Cargo’s fuel price index has once again hit the critical measure, and the cargo airline is raising its fuel surcharge on October 17.
Increases in the fuel surcharge are governed by the methodology of the index – which is based on the average price of aviation fuel in the world’s five key spot markets. Once the index exceeds a specific benchmark for two consecutive weeks, the fuel surcharge is adjusted upwards.
Lufthansa Cargo is, therefore, raising its fuel surcharge by 10% - from 0.50 to 0.55 euro cents per kilogram of actual freight weight.
