AgriSA has announced the appointment of a new disaster centre manager in the wake of a crippling drought in the Northern Cape and the ongoing spread of Foot and Mouth (FMD) disease in the northern provinces of the country.
Andrea Campher, a former attorney and master’s degree graduate in environmental law and governance, will head up the new centre, it was revealed earlier this week.
She said she hoped to combine her passion for the environment and her expertise in the legal field to help with preservation efforts and mitigate potential agricultural disasters in South Africa.
As part of her duties, Campher will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the centre, coming up with strategies for long-term solutions and fundraising efforts for drought or disease stricken areas.
Additionally, she will liaise with numerous government departments and officials to ensure effective disaster management strategies are in place.
The news of her appointment comes on the back of a disastrous period in the agricultural sector with the ongoing drought in the Northern Cape and the increase in FMD in Mpumalanga and Limpopo crippling the South African agri-sector.
