Cargo theft, corruption, high rates of crime and violence, poor infrastructure, weak governance, political instability and social unrest are among the major challenges to those doing business in or with most of the countries on the continent, according to Freight Watch Supply Chain Intelligence’s Global Cargo Theft Threat Assessment 2013 report, released recently. These are the major hotspots identified on the continent: GUINEA A shaky political situation. IVORY COAST The risk of spontaneous unrest and high crime rates, including mugging, robbery, burglary and carjacking. NIGERIA Stark rise in 2012 in the number of piracy incidents off the coast, as well as a high risk of terrorist attacks and kidnappings on land. MALI A high risk of terrorist attacks, especially since the French intervention in January 2013. CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC A volatile security situation outside of Bangui, the capital. ALGERIA Risk of terrorist attacks. LIBYA Political instability and a highly volatile security situation. SUDAN Extremely dangerous; bandits and terrorist groups targeting foreign visitors for attack and kidnapping, even in the capital of Khartoum. SOMALIA The risk of inter-clan and interfactional fighting, kidnapping and murder. KENYA A high incidence of violent crime and a continuous threat from Islamist terrorists. burundi The constant risk of sudden outbreaks of armed violence, acts of banditry and cross-border incursion by rebel groups. REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN Africa’s newest nation and a high-risk area for visitors and businesses, especially in the border region between Sudan and South Sudan.
