Africa is set for phenomenal economic growth in the years to come and the increase in trade associated with this growth will create a demand for supply chain skills, says Sydney Ramoorthy of Core Freight Systems. The freight industry opens up a multitude of avenues for employees, since a career in this sector encompasses disciplines along the entire logistics supply chain. “However, given the nature of the industry, virtually any of the skills applicable within the business world are pertinent,” Ramoorthy comments. These skills could be drawn from professions like engineering, finance, law, as well as information and communication technology. “Within the South African context, logistics costs are estimated to account for well over 10% of GDP, making a career in the freight industry something to consider from a number of perspectives, not least of which is the opportunity for employment inherent in a sector of this magnitude, or the potential available for improving the performance of the various activities and role players,” he added. Furthermore, he said, supply chain management stretches across borders, and often even across the ocean, meaning that those working within the freight industry develop skills that incorporate multinational business principles and international practices, as well as understanding and working within local and international regulations.
