Managing member of KLD Ships’ Agency, Katja Glöditzsch, grew up in the freight industry. With her mom working as a ship’s accountant, she often worked in the industry during school holidays and later, after a year of study, she returned to the industry full-time and still loves it “with a passion”. She has been in the industry for 23 years and in May 2011, established her own company along with a business partner. Glöditzsch says it was tough for a woman in freight 20 years ago but that the industry has come a long way since then in terms of workplace equality. “I had to work extremely hard and earn the respect of my male colleagues to prove that I was capable of doing the job. Today it is pleasing to note how many ladies have managed to secure senior positions in this industry.” She also says she had the support of her husband, who had worked in the warehousing and depot industry and understood the demands of the business. “There were times though where balancing the pressures of the job and family commitments became extremely challenging and sometimes almost impossible.” Her best advice? “My mom told me that I should always remain respectful, honest and transparent and work harder than ever. It worked!” CAPTION Katja Glöditzsch ... Passion for shipping.
