THE 6600 teu Sofie Maersk was launched at Odense steel shipyard last month as part of a series of 12 large postpanamax container vessels being built for Maersk Line.
Six of the vessels are of the S-type - 6600 teu. The other six are of the K-type, each with a capacity of 6000 teu. All will be too wide for passage through the Panama Canal.
Sofie Maersk has a length of 347m, width of 43m, height 24m from keel to deck and a draught of 14.5m.
Fully loaded the vessel reaches a speed of 25 knots. A bow thruster of 30 tons transverse thrust and two stern thrusters each with more than 15 tons transverse thrust have been fitted to facilitate easy manoeuvering in port.
