MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING Company (MSC) is due to take delivery of its latest new container ship, the MSC Diego, at the end of January from the Hanjin Shipyards in Korea. This is the first of five new 4000-TEU container ships under construction at this yard for MSC and the speed with which they are being built can be seen from the fact that the Diego's keel was laid as recently as August 1998.
Sections of the vessel are built separately and assembled as the work progresses. The photographs show the bridge and superstructure being delivered on a floating crane (picture A) before being lowered onto the waiting hull (picture B).
