The Zimbabwean National Roads Administration (Zinara) reports that it has, since January, distributed $16 million to road authorities countrywide.
From January to June, Zinara distributed $12 million to all of Zimbabwe’s 60 rural district councils and 33 urban councils.
According to Zimbabwean state-owned publication, The Herald, only 26 councils have cleared their first allocations and received their second quarter disbursements of $4 million.
Zinara human resources director, Precious Murove, told The Herald that audits of local authorities by ZInara officials were under way, adding that those who were found to have abused the money risked being disqualified from further hand outs.
He highlighted that ZInara was empowered under the Road Act which enables the administration to do audits and, where applicable, allow the law to take its course.
