Zambian railway line now linked to Nacala Corridor

After lying dormant for over 30 years, the Muchinji railway line to the Nacala Corridor was officially opened over the weekend, reports the Zambian press.

The Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation reports that Zambia Railways’ first goods train   ever – starting its trial run next month – will transport cargo from Zambia’s Chipata district to Nacala in Mozambique through to Malawi. The four day travel covers a 1 050-kilometre stretch to the Nacala port.

According to The Times of Zambia, the Muchinji railway line was launched in Chipata by eastern province Minister Malozo Sichone on Sunday. Sichone was quoted as saying the Zambian government would service the railway line through the provision of two locomotive engines and 264 wagons to Zambia Railways.
