A Great Lakes port is due for a redevelopment.
Press reports revealed that the Port of Mpulungu, at the southern tip of Lake Tanganyika in the Northern Province of Zambia, is due for rehabilitation. From Mpulungu, boats reach DR Congo, Tanzania and Burundi.
This has led the Zambian government to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Burundi to facilitate funding for the rehab of the Mpulungu Harbour.
Zambia’s transport, works, supply and communications minister Yamfwa Mukanga told the Times of Zambia that the agreement would enable them to access resources from the European Union (EU) for the project.
In an interview in Lusaka, Mukanga said the revival of the port was important to Zambia because it would contribute to increased trade among countries in the Great Lakes region.
