The arrival of the HMM Algeciras at the Port of Rotterdam yesterday marked a milestone for the shipping industry.

With capacity for 23 964 TEUs, it is slightly larger than its predecessor, the 23 756-TEU MSC Gülsün.

The vessel will carry 19 621 TEUS on its maiden voyage – itself a record number.

The Korean vessel was completed at Daewoo Shipping & Marine Engineering’s Okpo shipyard on 24 April. It is some 400 metres long and 61 metres wide.

HMM is the ninth-largest container shipping line worldwide and has ordered another eleven 24 000-TEU vessels in this class.
