The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged consumers to make every effort to thoroughly wash their fruit and vegetables before eating them.
The organisation’s Margaret Harris said that although fresh produce would be considered ‘low risk’ of transmission, all food must be washed before consumption, whether packaged or selected by customers.
FruitNet.com said that the biggest risk was in handling fresh produce and packaged goods that had been touched, coughed on or sneezed upon by an infected person.
According to the news site, the United Nations has also recommended people avoid using banknotes if possible, to avoid coming into contact with the virus.
