Trucker strike threat

ALAN PEAT THERE IS a threat of a major truck drivers’ strike, following the collapse of union talks with the road freight sector after two months. At the centre of the dispute, according to Ronnie Mamba, national spokesman for the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu), are salary increments, allowances for ultra long distance trips such as international destinations, as well as general conditions for workers. The strike is likely to include drivers of cash-in-transit vehicles, road ferry trucks, furniture pantechnicons, and ordinary long-distance trucks. And all it needs to spark action is the workers issuing a 48-hour notice, and the 60 000 members of the four main unions in the trucking industry – of which Satawu is the biggest – could all be out on strike.
