IN A tricky transhipment, shipping logistics specialists GAC SA recently played a key role in the movement of two massive, purpose-built semi-submersible tender rigs - the West Menang and the Smedvig T8 - from Singapore to
the DRC.
Floating off the two giant rigs from the Dockwise carrier Blue Marlin in Saldanha Bay was an eight-hour struggle in poor weather, but GAC’s complex planning saw the task carried out successfully, and the two rigs put under tow on their way to their final destination.
The company also saw to a host of other tasks associated with the movement, including
crew changes; the appointment of numerous sub-contractors; co-ordinating bunker supplies; arranging sea and air freight; as well as providing the specialised project capabilities to handle the 200-tons of break bulk cargo accompanying the rigs.
