Today (Monday) saw the launch by Transnet of a new initiative designed to change the face of small, micro, medium enterprises (SMMEs) in South Africa through the transfer of skills, providing access to research and development facilities for young business minds.
Branded the Matlafatšo Centre, and launched in partnership with Wits University, it aims to address the challenges facing young entrepreneurs when it comes to accessing information, starting businesses, research and training, The “one-stop-shop” centre will assist aspiring entrepreneurs and SMMEs to explore and test their products before accessing the market, according to a spokesman.
“The centre will also allow struggling entrepreneurs, particularly young black men and women as well as those living with disabilities, to introduce and expand new business ideas in all economic spheres,” the spokesman said.
Transnet plans to invest a total of R62.105 million in the walk-in enterprise development centre over a five-year period.
To date it has invested R19.4 million.
Speaking at the launch, Transnet chief executive Siyabonga Gama said the investment would try to address the country’s skills shortage when it comes to innovation, research and development and the art of entrepreneurship.
