Transnet has downplayed the extent of a fire that occurred at the agriport terminal of the Maydon Wharf Precinct at the Port of Durban in the early hours of Saturday morning.
This after footage was received showing badly damaged facilities, with reports claiming that the state-owned company was trying to conceal what was alleged to have been a deliberate attack, resulting in the disruption of ship-to-shore cargo movement.
Over the weekend, though, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) refuted this.
A statement issued yesterday by TNPA said it was aware of the weekend fire experienced by Transnet Port Terminals.
“The fire was reported accordingly and successfully contained around 5:30am. At this stage, the cause of the incident is still unknown and is being investigated,” TNPA said.
“As the Ports Authority, we continue to monitor and work closely with the terminal operator to ensure the utmost safety for Transnet employees and port users widely.”
