Several of Transnet Port Authority’s Lawhill Maritime Centre’s bursary holders were recently presented with awards at Lawhill’s annual awards evening.
Grade 12 learners, Saluse Tsengiwe of Khayelitsha and Thandeka Duma of Durban were presented with Newall Family Special Awards. Tsengiwe and Duma also received certificates for completing modules in Maritime Economics and Nautical Sciences, the two maritime studies subjects which form part of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) curriculum.
Grade 11 TNPA Lawhill bursary holder, Lizwi Dlamini of Durban was honoured with the Newall Family Academic Award for Nautical Science, while Euston Kockera, also a TNPA bursary holder, received a Sean Day Scholarship for 2017. Sean Day Scholarships are awarded to the top achievers in each Grade.
Siphelele Ncube, a Grade 11 TNPA bursary holder from Durban, received the Nolleen Roussouw Memorial Trophy for Leadership, Academic Achievement and Involvement in School Activities in Grade 11.
Richard Vallihu, chief executive of TNPA, said: “TNPA is always very proud of the many achievements of our students at Lawhill. It is an honour to have provided 71 bursary opportunities, totalling R3 million for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds since 2006. Lawhill is celebrating its 21st year of operation and since 1995 has served as an excellent vehicle for developing the future leaders in the maritime industry.”
“It is also our pleasure to announce six new bursary awards for grade 10 to 12 studies at Lawhill from 2017 to 2019. These six learners have been selected by Lawhill for the TNPA bursary and will receive full boarding and tuition sponsorship as well as paid transport to Lawhill and back, four times a year,” he added.
