SWIFT HANDLING SERVICES, the airport apron handling company which has been in operation for the past four years, is now part of a new consortium in this country and has had its name changed to Swissport South Africa.
It will continue to handle the six incoming Swissair flights each week, as well as other airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa and Zimbabwe Express whom they represent in this respect.
The takeover of control of the previous Swift Handling Services was made by the consortium of Swissport International AG, a member of the Sair group and black empowerment group Zwele-banzi Project Management. Chairman of Swissport South Africa is Jerome Ngwenya, with Mike van der Watt as m.d.
Zwelebanzi is a substantial shareholder in the South African division of Swissport International, which has bases in Zurich, Geneva and Basel, and representation in the UK, Germany, Israel, Brazil, Turkey and Kenya.
According to Van der Watt, Swissport will extend its service operations to its new South African bases. At present it is fully active at the major airports of Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban with services also operating in East London and Port Elizabeth.
