Information collected by TomTom from vehicles fitted with GPSs has shown that the overall average travel time on the N1 North road section from Buccleuch to Old Johannesburg Road off ramp has been reduced by 50%. This has been credited to the improvements on this road section brought about by the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), according to information released by Sanral.
The study found that the travel time had been cut down to 13 minutes.
The most noteworthy finding of the study is the improvement in the average speed through the Allandale Interchange which has risen to 70km/h. TomTom presented these figures at its 5-year celebration held in Soweto recently.
“The study provides proof that Sanral has delivered what we set out to achieve with the implementation of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, which was aimed at helping to reduce congestion and improve the driving experience on Gauteng’s busiest roads,” said Sanral.
In 2011 IBM’s Global Commuter Pain Survey also revealed that Johannesburg was one of 14 cities surveyed that experienced improvements in traffic flow between 2010 and 2011.
