Successful trial runs of sulphur imports have opened the way for the addition of a new commodity to the mix going through the port of Beira, according to operations director Anselmo Guila. Sulphur is classified as hazardous cargo, which requires special handling. The first shipment of 27 000 tons bound for the Copperbelt had an immediate impact on the balance of freight, and helped attract more copper and cobalt to the Beira corridor, he says. Customer services manager Leticia Ferreira says the port has increased its market share of cargo to and from Zambia by between 15 and 20% over the past year.
