... with revision based on new unit standards imminent
THE MARITIME Industry Training Board: Forwarding and Clearing (MITB:F&C) last week handed over new course material for Forwarding Practice to its students.
The course starts this week and ends in January next year.
This is probably the last time that the Forwarding Practice material will be presented in its current format, said MITB: F&C executive director, Charles Dey.
MITB: F&C adjudicated a tender for writing of all course material relating to the new Unit Standards which were drafted last year. This includes Customs, Forwarding Practice, Supply Chain Management and Export.
Dey said he would be visiting New Zealand in July to consult with the New Zealand Maritime School of Industry's Manukau Institute of Technology, which specialises in training for the freight forwarding industry.
New Zealand is the country which first put Unit Standards and outcome-based standards on the map, and they are therefore experts in the field. We are lucky they are so closely aligned with the industry, he said.
The MITB:F&C had initial discussions with the institute and the South African Unit Standards substantially encapsulate its systems, said Dey.
The objective of the trip is to do some fine-tuning so that at the end of the day he will come away with a comprehensive system. This will combine the Unit Standards with others of a more generic nature such as computer skills, accounting and people management, into a comprehensive set of qualifications for the industry so that
they can be negotiated for
the National Qualifications Framework.
