HEAVY SWELLS in Cape Town were delaying ships entering the port as FTW went to press on Monday morning, with the prospect of more inclement weather on the way.
"It's getting the pilots onto the incoming vessels and then facing the swells which is our problem," port captain Eddie Bremner told FTW. "Sailings out of the harbour haven't been affected to any great extent, but there are a number of vessels waiting at anchorage two or three kilometres out in the bay, and some have gone out to sea to await better weather before attempting to berth.
"Docking is the real problem, with vessels needing the use of dry dock and synchrolift facilities a real difficulty in these conditions. There is even an oil rig out there waiting for entry to undergo refitting which we can't consider bringing in until it has calmed down enough."
