ONE GOOD indicator of the level of theft of containerised goods comes in the latest report from the Johannesburg truck theft unit.In the first third of this year, 401 cases of stolen container trucks and/or their container contents were reported to the unit.

Some 303 people were arrested in that same period, and vehicles and goods valued at R114 million were recovered. There is also to be a change of name in the unit. For too long, the public has mistakenly seen the unit as being an anti-hijack brigade, when theft of containerised import and export goods moving around the country has been their primary target. The new name Transito Investigation Unit has been devised to emphasise this distinct area of investigation covered by the national squad.
