Software helps minimise risks

Given the complexity of the perishable cargo environment, it is important that every element of the supply chain is optimised to minimise the “unknown” unknowns that could potentially disrupt the f low, says Glenn Lawson of Johannesburg-based import & export software system service provider Core Freight Systems. “We have a number of clients who handle perishable exports and have, in consultation with them, made refinements to the CoreFreight application to accommodate their perishable export processing. Clearly the challenges associated with this industry are not solved with a piece of forwarding and clearing software. “However, as far as it is within our ambit, we make sure that we contribute to the smooth functioning of the overall South African leg of the perishables supply chain.” And although the sector may be dwarfed by mineral and metals exports, it’s an important sector of the South African economy, says Lawson. “Notwithstanding the impact of the economic turmoil of the past few years, it will continue to provide meaningful opportunities for the country – not only in the traditional European markets but for the vast population found in Asia. Local operators are also well placed to serve the rising demand projected for the African continent,” he added.
