Socio-economic Impact Road to Rail Freight

The Climate Support Programme (CSP) of the Deutche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zasammenarbeit (GIZ) South African office supports the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) in achieving the transition to a low carbon and climate resilient society as described in South Africa's National Climate Change Response White Paper. The initial findings of the mitigation potential analysis revealed that the freight shift from road to rail was one of the measures that could play an important role to reduce the road transport emissions. An impact assessment which considers a range of criteria associated with the implementation of the mitigation options was conducted in the mitigation potential analysis and requires that a more focused and in-depth study on the socio-economic impact of the proposed road and rail freight shift be done. The outcomes of this study will provide input into the emission reduction interventions in the transport sector. GIZ invites eligible and professional companies with local presence in South Africa to request the documentation to be completed from tsholofelo.molefe@giz.de by 07 February 2014.
