Transnet’s R300bn investment programme is not purely about new equipment and new infrastructure. Underpinning it all is human capital development. “For us this is absolutely key and will be at the forefront of our current plan,” Transnet Port Terminals CEO Karl Socikwa said last week. “We have to make sure that as we create the jobs, we are developing our people to be able to operate the infrastructure and equipment optimally in order to realise the levels of productivity that are desired. “We are working very closely with organised labour in finding new and innovative ways of how we structure the relationship to ensure that we unlock heightened levels of productivity. A number of apprenticeship programmes have been rolled out and we are currently working with the Belgian government to find ways we can develop our team in a focused way for optimal performance.” CAPTION: In training ...
