CFR Freight has become the
first ‘shipper’ using Method 2
to be approved in terms of the
new Safety of Life at Sea Verified
Gross Mass regulations that kick
in on July 1.
The independent groupage
specialist’s national operations
are now approved in terms of
Method 2 which provides for the
weighing of the contents, dunnage
and packaging of the cargo and
adding this to the tare weight of
the container.
“We are shipper number 001,”
said CFR Freight managing
director Martin Keck, “which
means that any forwarder who
entrusts his cargo to us has
the peace of mind of knowing
that it complies with the new
legislation.”
ABC Kings was the SA
Maritime Safety Authorityaccredited
third party responsible
for approving the facilities and
procedures at CFR Freight’s
ZacPak depots in Gauteng,
Durban, Cape Town and Port
Elizabeth.
In terms of the new
regulations, if the freight
forwarder or NVOCC is the one
signing the bill of lading with the
shipping line he is the shipper for
purposes of these guidelines.
