At least seven new airports are under construction in Africa, while another six are in the process of major upgrades, according to the Centre for Aviation. New airports due to come on stream in the next two years are in Kigali (Rwanda), Didoma (Tanzania), Khartoum (Sudan), Luanda (Angola), Ndola (Zambia) and Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). Ethiopia’s new airport in Addis Ababa is due to start operating in 2024. It is planned to have four runways and to transform Ethiopia into a major aviation hub for East Africa. Airports undergoing upgrades valued at US$0.5 billion or more include Algiers (Algeria), Nairobi (Kenya), Tripoli (Libya), Abuja (Nigeria) and South Africa’s Cape Town and Lanseria airports.
