Sars AEO programme: a step in the right direction

Nalini Maharaj, partner at Shepstone & Wylie.
Publish Date:
02 Dec 2024

Sars introduced the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) system in November 2020.

Four years later, thousands of stakeholders are successfully registered under the programme, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements while delivering preferential benefits to registrants.

The process is simple, explains Nalini Maharaj, a partner at Shepstone & Wylie, and provided your business is compliant with all tax obligations, can demonstrate sufficient knowledge in customs and excise laws and procedures, has an appropriate accounting and effective computer system, and can demonstrate financial viability, your application may be approved seamlessly.

There are currently two levels of accreditation, level one being AEO compliance and level two, AEO security. The programme paves the way for a world-class compliance initiative and effective stakeholder collaboration.
