Samsa monitors grounded vessel

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) is closely monitoring the situation following the fire and grounding of the fishing vessel FV Silver Dorado near Cape Recife Lighthouse off Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) on Monday.

Samsa said, since the initial report to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) at around 6pm on Monday, significant progress had been made, including the safe evacuation of all 21 crew members to the Port of Gqeberha.

No injuries were reported.

“The vessel remains grounded approximately 200 metres offshore. Burnt debris and a strong diesel smell were reported yesterday, although the smell has lessened today (Wednesday). Collection of debris is under way,” the maritime authority said.

Samsa said a professional salvaging team had been appointed, that was preparing a clean-up and wreckage removal plan for accounting and recovery purposes.

“Two beach clean-up teams are currently active, and recovery of fishing vessel equipment and machinery offshore is planned over the next two to three days, subject to wave energy conditions.”

Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds teams have been on-site monitoring for wildlife impact. No affected seabirds have been reported yet.

“An earlier navigation warning will remain active to alert mariners of potential hazards from debris,” the maritime authority said.

Samsa said it was continuing to work closely with stakeholders to ensure safety, pollution prevention, and compliance with maritime regulations.

“The investigation into the cause of the fire and assessment of environmental impact is ongoing.”
