Better client communication a priority Ray Smuts BONUSES FOR superior and penalties for inadequate performance are in the offing at the Port of Saldanha on the Cape West coast - all part of Portnet strategy aimed at improving service levels to the client. "A terminal would be liable to a financial penalty by the client if poor performance results in a vessel being delayed but if loading is above the norm the terminal could enjoy a bonus from the client," says port manager Eugene Kearns. As to how the port is addressing client demands, Kearns says Portnet is currently focusing on implementing a revised client relationship marketing strategy aimed at improving communication with "the right client and providing the right offer (product or price) through the right channel at the right time." Both the iron ore and multi-purpose terminals are similarly implementing actions aimed at meeting client demands. Capital Investment The iron ore terminal has committed capital investment of around R631 million over a three-year period to allow for a refurbishing and expansion programme that will lift design capacity from the current 18 million to 38 million tons per annum within ten years. Operating at near-capacity, the MPT has made great strides in improving loading rates on steel coils and is working toward implementing a performance management scheme with clients. Kearns, formerly the portÕs financial manager, says the National Ports Authority (NPA) is also gearing toward capacity expansion by means of acquiring additional land for future port development as well as planned quay extensions for the MPT within the next two years. "Being part of the national ports network system, ports do not actively compete for cargoes but rather complement each other in serving clients and their natural hinterland best based on the geographical location of the port. Sourcing new business is by way of strong links with government departments, industry partners and participation in international trade delegations." Marketing effort within the port will be boosted by the recent appointment of Hannes Human as marketing manager for the MPT and the pending appointment of a marketing manager for the NPA. New business opportunities include the planned increase in iron ore exports and the port is receiving continuous enquiries such as that from an international investor wishing to set up a steel fabricating plant within or adjacent to the port. l With a depth of up to 23m, Saldanha is the best natural harbour on the South African coastline and best suited to handling VLCCs (very large cargo carriers).
