The Climate Services Centre (CSS) of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has warned of the possibility of heavy rain across the region, with some areas expected to receive up to 100mm in a 24-hour period until May 2.
The SADC Secretariat reports that the CSS “is forecasting a likelihood of rainfall amounts exceeding 50mm”.
The areas it identifies as presenting a dangerous possibility of localised flooding include northern Angola, south-eastern Botswana, the Comoros, south-western and north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the eastern parts of Eswatini (Swaziland), parts of Lesotho, the east coast of Madagascar, south-western Mozambique, Seychelles and central to eastern South Africa.
In extreme cases rainfall could exceed 100mm, the CSS has warned.
