SOUTH AFRICAN Airways has put forward a bid to operate a new national airline for the Nigerian government following the liquidation of Air Nigeria. SAA executive manager: corporate communications Rich Mkhondo told FTW’s sister publication, TNW, that plans were drawn for a long-term strategy to build a three-hub network in Africa. In addition to Johannesburg, the airline’s eastern hub operates in conjunction with Air Tanzania. The Nigerian bid will help to create a western hub. The deal, once approved by the Nigerian authorities, would need to be ratified by the SAA board and rubber-stamped by the SA government.
