A TRAINING collaboration programme between the port authorities of South Africa and Nigeria will see Nigerian pilots being trained aboard various harbour craft in the Port of Cape Town. The Nigerian Ports Authority visited last year to assess South Africa’s training facilities. In the past Nigerian officers have been trained in Europe. The first eight Nigerian trainee marine pilots have completed their course, and according to Captain Jim Abbott, head of Maritime Facilitators of South Africa, this will be an ongoing initiative with further groups on the planning schedule for next year.
