South African saw growth in its coal exports to India last year and is looking to increase that even further this year by taking advantage of new opportunities. This includes picking up the gap left by a slump in Indonesian exports to India, according to news reports.
Figures by market analyst, IHS Energy, show that 36 million tonnes of South African coal was shipped through Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) to India last year, 6 million more than 2014.
“As far as South African coal for India is concerned, it is definitely on a growth path. How long and how much is yet to be seen," Arun Maheshwari, senior vice president commercial for Indian firm, JSW Steel, was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.
