Japanese car maker, Mitsubishi, has globally halted production and sales of its more than 600 000 vehicles that were allegedly rigged during testing to make them seem more fuel-efficient than they were.
The manufacturer warned that the number of affected vehicles would likely rise. Mitsubishi South Africa said in a statement that vehicles involved in the fuel-consumption debacle were not sold locally.
Mitsubishi SA marketing manager, Braam Faul, said: "The Mitsubishi Motor Corporation announced that it would set up a committee – consisting of external experts only – to further investigate products manufactured for the export market, and would publish the results of the investigation as soon as it was completed.”
