Reducing overheads, optimising loads and ensuring the security of the goods being shipped – together with on-time arrival – starts with the effective planning of the route, says Megan Moodley of Kris Freight Logistics. “In the current market everyone is looking for ways of reducing costs. We do this by maximising loads and ensuring that we use the most cost-effective routes. “In short, we don’t just provide transport, we tailor the trip and the load to meet the needs of the client,” he says. Stringent rules apply as to which routes drivers may use, as well as the pre-selection of overnight points to manage risk to the freight being carried and the fleet, he says. The Kris Freight transport schedule includes strict cut-off times at secure truck rest stops along transport routes. This supports safe and efficient cargo delivery within the specified time, and is part of the company’s environmental health and safety programme, says Moodlley. All the company’s vehicles are tracked 24 hours a day through on-board C Track Tracking units. In addition, drivers have a 24-hour communication link to the operations team, the company’s owners and roadside assistance. The choice of drivers is as important as the route, he believes. The company has a strict selection process to ensure that only the best drivers are employed. Complete background checks are made of all applicants. This ensures that the company’s credibility and reputation for dependability are maintained, he says.
