New structure further delays the issueEXPECT A further delay in the announcement of improvements to container facilities at the Durban terminal.
That's the unofficial verdict from those in the know. New management appointments have ensured this.
Extensions have been on hold or at least delayed for well over 18 months since the completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment study commissioned by Portnet. As late as November last year, however, Portnet was still confidently saying that a decision was imminent, but then came the announcemnt of Rob Childs as Portnet's new m.d.
It is understood that Childs wanted to acquaint himself with all options available, especially in the light of the downturn in the economy leading to a lower growth rate in container movements. Added to this Portnet has embarked on a programme of learning to 'work smarter' and management wants to evaluate this.
Now comes the news of further appointments, including general managers responsible and in overall charge of the seven ports. These will undoubtedly lead to yet further delays, as the new appointees settle in. At least, that's the whisper. Wise money says don't expect an early start to additional berths at Pier Two, or the relocation of the Combi terminal. Not yet, anyway.
