PORTNET HAS set up a task group to fast-track a new cruise ship terminal for Durban.
Following the urgent meeting called by top level port, city and tourism role players recently, a task force has been instructed to present all the pros and cons of a viable solution to Durban's major embarrassment - its facilities for the increasing number of ocean cruise liners calling every week at the port. Their brief is to make suggestions on a suitable site within 30 days.
Time is of the essence, says Portnet spokesperson Yvonne de Kock. Everyone present at the meeting was aware of the sense of urgency. The situation at the existing N-Shed terminal has been the source of added criticism in recent weeks, following the arrival of luxury round-the-world cruise ships, which have included the Oriana and Crystal Symphony. With MSC's Symphony now based in Durban for an 18-month season, the comings and goings of these floating hotels is set to continue without interruption.
