Operations at Cape Town’s Container Terminal (CTCT) could be suspended this weekend, February 15 and 16, because of inclement weather, Maersk has said in an advisory to its clients.
“Kindly note that extreme weather conditions, including strong winds, high waves and heavy rain, are forecast along the South African coastline,” the Danish line is warning.
According to information it had received, there is a high risk of weather impacting operations at the CTCT.
It is also anticipated that inclement conditions will spread all along the coast towards the ports of Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) and Ngqura.
“This will impact vessel movement and operations,” Maersk said.
As stormy weather and surging seas are expected to spread along the southern Cape coast, “the worst impact is expected in Port Elizabeth”.
“Vessels are expected to seek shelter (and) alter their course to avoid the impacted areas.
“Please expect delays over the next few days,” Maersk said.

Freight News has also been informed by the South African Association of Freight Forwarders (Saaff) that the container terminal at the Port of Ngqura "has been windbound since 00:24 (February 13).
"We will monitor and update when the situation changes," Saaff reported.
