Port of Dar es Salaam to more than double container capacity

Tanzania Ports Authority is to invest US$560-million in developing two new container terminals at the port of Dar es Salaam, reports Ship-Technology. The new terminals will add 500 000-TEU capacity to the port, which recorded a 460 000-TEU capacity in 2010. Construction is expected to commence by the end of next year. Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's principal port with a capacity to handle 4.1-million tonnes of dry cargo and six million tonnes of bulk liquid cargo. The port has a total quay length of 2 000-metres with 11 deepwater berths, and handles 95% of the country's international trade. The port also serves the landlocked countries of Malawi, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda.
