Members of a “blue light gang” preying on trucks in the Midrand area have been dealt a blow after police pounced on a property in Glen Austin.
Acting on a tip-off, members of the SA Police Service (Saps) seized hi-tech televisions and other equipment stolen by the gang, who were masquerading as police officers and forcing truck drivers off the road.
Early this morning, it was confirmed that at least two members of the hijacking syndicate had been arrested during the property search at Glen Austin.
Following the bust, police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said: “The truck hijacking police unit is following several leads to arrest the rest of the gang.”
He also appealed to members of the public with any information that could assist police to come forward.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon on various charges, ranging from armed robbery to impersonating police officers.
Trucks drivers operating in the area have been warned to be extra vigilant by looking out for improper police markings on Saps cars.
So-called police vehicles that only have lights and no official markings should also be avoided.
