A contract to provide pitto-
port logistics for
Mozambique’s first large-scale
graphite mine has
been awarded to Grindrod
Logistics Mozambique by
Australian-listed Syrah
Resources and Trading
Operations DMCC.
Grindrod will be responsible
for all elements of the
service, including overall
logistics management, export
documentation management and
cargo risk cover.
Syrah has started mining
graphite near Balama in
northern Mozambique through
its wholly owned subsidiary
Twigg Exploration & Mining
Limitada (TEML).
The mine is located on a
120 square kilometre mining
concession in the Cabo Delgado
province approximately 500km
inland from Nacala Port.
The project entails the
transport, handling, container
packing, storage, and export
clearance of f lake graphite via
the port of Nacala in northern
Mozambique. Exports of up to
360 000 million tons a year are
expected, according to Adriaan
van Dyk, Mozambique country
executive of Sturrock Grindrod
Maritime.
On its website Syrah says
“Balama will be the leading
global producer of high purity
graphite.
“Coated spherical graphite is
a high value, processed graphite
product which is used to produce
battery anode material (BAM)
for anodes in lithium (Li) ion
batteries.
“As a result of increasing
global demand from electric
vehicle and grid storage
applications, the Li-ion battery
market is expected to see
significant growth over the
medium term”.
The coming on stream of the
mine provides a major boost for
the port of Nacala as guaranteed
volumes will attract more
frequent vessel calls.
A number of Grindrod’s
Mozambican companies are
involved in the project.
Grindrod Logistics
Mozambique as the integrated
logistics component (consisting
of Carrier Logistics and
Grindrod Intermodal) and
Sturrock Grindrod Maritime are
providing operational services,
while the shared services
are being run by Grindrod
Mozambique.
