The removal of a

compulsory provision

that shippers using the

port of Nacala move

cargo through Terminal Especial

de Exportação de Nacala (TEEN)

is expected to help grow volumes

over time, according to Captain

Jai Misra, owner’s representative

for Messina Line in Mozambique.

Exporters have been slow

to respond to the lifting of the

restriction, however.

“Currently volumes through

Nacala are at an historic low.

“The mandatory usage of

TEEN has been removed. Though

this is expected to bring down

costs for exporters, it does not

seem to have been the catalyst

that was anticipated,” he says.

Exporters have been forced

to use the TEEN terminal since

January 2012.

Operation of the terminal has

been concessioned out to NCL &

Africa Import and Export.

Exporters have been using

Dar es Salaam or Beira as

alternatives.

According to the shipping

lines association of Mozambique,

Associação das Linhas de

Navegação, Nacala is the secondmost

expensive port of call for

shipping lines in Mozambique

after Maputo.
