The projected volume of traffic to be carried by National Railways of Zimbabwe for the year to the end of March 1998 will increase by 30% to 14,5 million tonnes. Senior planning manager Mazik Banana says that coal, sugar and general agricultural goods will account for most of the extra tonnage.
In a report on NRZ efficiency, Banana says that turnaround times of foreign wagons, which have led to problems in the past, have generally been good except for those from Mozambique, which have frequently been involved in derailments. But there has been a marked improvement recently, with only eight derailments in the last quarter compared with 33 in the previous three months.
