New quay planned

Plans are being rolled out for a new quay and upgraded fertiliser and dry bulk terminals in the port of Beira. Phase 1 of the fertiliser terminal will see the creation of a buffering facility, according to Félix Machado, marketing and sales manager for the port of Beira. Phase 2, planned for completion in 2023, will see a terminal capable of keeping 160 000 tons of fertiliser in transit storage. It will be able to handle 7 500 tons a day, or two million tons a year. Demand for fertiliser is being driven by the revitalisation of agriculture in the region served by the port of Beira. The dry bulk terminal will handle a variety of commodities, including chrome, iron ore, clinker, coal and granite. Construction is due to start on the first phase of a new general purpose quay in 2015. Some 600 metres of quayside will be built on reclaimed land. The quayside will be designed to accommodate rail-mounted gantry cranes. Three phases of development are planned.
