Cross-border transport specialist Image Freight has expanded its f leet to offer solutions for longer, heavier and irregular loads. While the company has for some time provided an abnormal load service, the acquisition of two quad axle step decks answers customer demand for specialised shipping solutions. “Previously we only transported abnormal loads that would fit onto a regular trailer. These quad axle step decks however offer a new dimension,” Johannesburg branch manager Peter Fernandes told FTW. “The trailers can extend by an additional four metres, which is slightly more than the original 16 metre length. It can also extend sideways by about half a metre on each side.”He added that customer demand from Zambia and DRC was the biggest driving force behind the acquisition of the new trailers. “A n d this is the transport segment in which the new equipment w ill be relevant.” While cross-border transport is never without its challenges, according to Fernandes one of the biggest concerns is the state of the roads. “In countries like Botswana and Zimbabwe the roads have started to deteriorate quite badly but at least there are still roads. When you start moving furthernorth to countries such as Mozambique and Zambia, there just aren’t any roads or the ones in operation are highly congested.”
